Common Questions Regarding Luxury Watches

By Walter Landry

An educated buyer is a person who will generally get a better deal and be more satisfied with their product. With so many different terms and brands regarding luxury watches, it is important to have a little information before making a purchase. Here are some top questions regarding these products and the answers to them.

What does Swiss made mean? Swiss made is a huge selling point for timepieces as they are commonly known as being the best of quality. In order for a piece to be branded Swiss made it must have its casing assembled directly in Switzerland and have at least 50% of its parts originate from there.

What does waterproof mean? Be careful of items that claim to be waterproof when they are simply water resistant. Water resistance means that the product does not allow moisture to penetrate the casing, while a full on waterproof watch is able to be completely submerged.

Is self winding better than mechanical? Like many of these questions, only the buyer can answer, but many items that are not of the utmost quality will have the mechanical winder break first. Some also prefer the feel of winding the watch manually, so it really just depends on preference and brand quality.

Are tourbillions worth it? Tourbillions are components that allow the watch to keep time without gravity affecting the piece. Like many questions it all comes down to personal preference, but many believe that unless this is your only method of keeping time that they generally are not.

What is the best brand? If you asked a hundred different experts this same question, you would come up with a variety of different answers. With that said, however, there are a few brands that are on top of most lists who have a reputation for luxury and quality.
